Chew Boon Juan – Expands His Business , Takes A World Tour

Chew Boon Juan's venture into tin mining paid off handsomely. The newfound wealth enabled him to further expand his business.

He went into semi-retirement and bought a mansion in Penang and even took a world tour. Such was the charmed life of Chew Boon Juan.

In 1904 after the death of his mother Chew Boon Juan sent for his 3rd brother to come over to help him in his business.

In 1909 Chew Boon Seong, Boon Juan’s elder brother passed away suddenly at the age of 36. 

He sent for Boon Hong, his youngest brother who recently graduated from University to come over help him. He arrived in 1910 at the age of 24.



In 1910 Boon Juan founded Ban Hoe Seng . It was formed to handle the rice wholesale business and was located at Market Street in Ipoh.

In 1912 at the age of 37 Boon Juan took semi-retirement. He bought a mansion on North Beach Road, Penang (now  Guerney Drive) where he lived the rest of his life.

In 1915 Ban Hoe Seng, now a Headquarters, was shifted to a three storey building at 62 and 64 Belfield Street, Ipoh.

In 1919 Boon Juan built a bungalow on a three acre site at Chamberlain Hulu Road, Ipoh. It is currently the Raja Perempuan School.


 In 1924 Boon Juan went on a thirteenth month round-the-world tour with his friend Chung Thye Phin, the last Chinese Captain of Perak.



In the 1930s he bought Chung Thye Phin’s bungalow situated on a 50 acre estate in Taiping. He called it Drummond Hill now renamed Bukit Drummond and is used as an army camp.
